Jubilation, excitement, music rented/engulfed the air as the Campus Journalists under the aegis of Association of Student Communicators (ASCOM), Esep le Berger University, Cotonou Benin Republic celebrated her 2021 Esep MEDIA WEEK recently.
The One – Week long ceremony well packaged had among the following, Flag-off/Rally, Novelty Match (Female Category), Seminar/Empowerment and Dinner/Award/Raffle Draw.
Dignitaries from all walks of life graced the grand finale which included the Founder and President of the institution, Germane Ganlono, the Academic Director , Gbenga Akande,heads of departments, a contestants at the Nigerian Idol, Easymoyi, Business and school owners in Beni Republic among others.
The celebration kick-started by unveiling the 2021 Media Week on Monday, April 26th in the Mass Communication department, the home of aspiring Communicators/Journalists. Thereafter, there was a rally round the university community to create awareness about the Media Week.
Meanwhile, the Day 2 witnessed a Novelty match between ASCOM Goalgetters Team [Female] and Esep Pacesetter Team [Female]. The exciting match which took place at Cotonou deux ended in a draw (2-2).
Moving towards the high point of the ceremony was the seminar with the theme,”The New Media and the dangers of Fake unverified news”. The contributors to the topic enjoined the upcoming journalists to be weary in spreading unfounded news. This, they vehemently condemned as the scar(s) caused by fake news, in spite the corridgendum/rejoinder won’t in any way clear the scar/injury caused in the first place. Hence, credible source(s) should be contacted to ascertain the authenticity of a news story.
In the same vein, two ex-students of the department, Miss Rukayat Mudashiru and Miss Olaoluwa Adegbite(Nee Shorungbe) facilitated the Empowerment section of the event. The duo emphasized on the essence of financial education. It was stated clearly that schooling is very important but not enough. Thus, there’s need to get your meal ticket even while schooling. Furthermore, they spoke on the reasons entrepreneurship is important. The participants were encouraged to reprogramme their mindset for the 21st century business.
The grand finale of the celebration was the Media Dinner/Award/Raffle Draw. The event centre filled up to its caepacity as lecturers, students, friends, indigenes joined to celebrate the campus Journalists fondly called Media Captains on Campus.
Awards were given to outstanding Students of the department as well as notable Lecturers for their excellent contribution to the association. Meanwhile, random tickets were picked to choose winners of the raffle draw. Chetachi Nwabueze smiled home with the star prize, a Refrigerator.
